Goodreads asked Ray O'Conor:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ray O'Conor A letter penned in 1944 and given to me 61 years later, revealed the poignant and powerful true story of Helen Gregg, one of eight children of Irish immigrant parents raised in the miseries of Hell's Kitchen during the Great Depression and Clarence R. Stephenson, an Army Air Corps cadet, raised in the dying industrial city of Ironton, Ohio. Fate brought them together in New York's Central park in 1942. From the moment their eyes met, they knew their lives would never be the same.
