I think if you are writing or creating any kind of art it is important to do what YOU love. If it is created from your heart it will not matter if it is only YOU that appreciates it. Also, if created from your heart, any other appreciation in any form is a bonus.
Learn as much as you can while you are writing, join a writers group (more than one) attend workshops and festivals, meet other writers, and most importantly find a good editor and take advice.
