Mary asked Jonathan Stroud:

I'm afraid this one is glaringly obvious, but Lockwood seems to be modeled on Sherlock Holmes. If so, would you say that Lucy has any similarities to Watson? Oh, and as the kids get older, will there be any romantic sparks between any of the three of them?

Jonathan Stroud Well, I think the parallel could be taken too far: Lockwood's rather more socially skilled than S Holmes, for one thing. But they're both charismatic heroes with a nice line in baiting authority. And Lucy shares with Watson an observer's perspective, allowing us to get close to the hero, while keeping them at a slight remove. But there's a lot more to her than that. Romantic sparks? Depends how you define 'spark', I think. We wouldn't want 32 Portland Row catching fire.
