To me, Bitter Greens, The Beast's Garden, and The Wild Girl seem like they fit nicely into one subgenre of historical fiction while your children series seem like a totally different entity. Do you feel that way or do you think of those three and your children's books as one canon, if you will?

Kate Forsyth That's a really interesting question. I think of all my books as being on a spectrum between historical fiction and heroic fantasy. The Beast's Garden is at the historical end of the spectrum, and so are my children's books The Chain of Charms, which also have very little magic in them. The Witches of Eileanan are at the fantastical end of the spectrum, along with my children's series The Impossible Quest. Other books of mine - such as Bitter Greens - are ranged in between. I
