For me, it's getting inside a character's skin and brain, putting words into his/her mouth, and living out situations I will never experience in my own life. There's something so exhilarating about creating a world for my characters and then putting them in situations so dire/funny/unbelievable that it takes all the creativity I have to get them back out in one piece.
