How did you find the name Koyasan as a girl's name? Since it is the name of a mountain in Japan. Is there a relation between these two? :)

Yes -- I visited the mountain of Koyasan during a book tour to Japan! (I also visited a mountain called Hagurosan a few years earlier, which resulted in another story, which was named after it.) The story was inspired by something that happened there with my Japanese agent, Maiko. She didn't want to cross a bridge over a stream to visit one of the temples, because she was afraid of evil spirits on the other side. I started riffing on that, and the book Koyasan was the result!

I was wondering Mr. Shan, Why did you have Darren die in your 12th book of Cirque Du Freak? and also, I was waiting in the 10th book for Darren to meet his parents later on. Why didn't you rejoin them? I really love your books, these are just some questions that have lingered in my head...

Many of my reluctant reader students are interested in scary stories, but I need the scary hook to be in the first couple of chapters. I enjoyed the Thin Executioner, but the creepy bits were a long way into the story. Which of your books would you recommend to get my students hooked fast?
