sophia ! asked Tracy Holczer:

Where did you get the idea to write The Secret Hum of a Daisy?

Tracy Holczer A book is a bit of a stew of ideas. The easy answer is I woke up one morning with the main character in my mind and her circumstances, the loss of her mother. I sat down and wrote about ten pages and was curious to find out more.

The deeper answer is that there was some loss I experienced as a child, well actually, a lot of losses all at one time. The memory of those losses and the confusion that went with them was an inspiration for me to share. I figured if I'd had those experiences as a child, other children had too. I wanted to write a story about people who found connection to each other through their own particular losses so hopefully, kids will understand they're not alone with their big feelings.

But again, writing is a stew of lots of things - I love the mountains and so I put them in and I love art, so I put that in, too. I like to think about how things are connected and so that runs through the story, too.

Thanks for asking!
