Read and study how other writers write. When you find someone you like, work out what it is about their writing that fires you. Make good use of similes and metaphors. Cut down heavily on adjectives and adverbs. To be effective, use them sparingly. Concentrate on characters. Use people or combinations you have met in your own life. Work on making dialogue realistic.
