Read, read, and read some more. Certainly, you should read books in the genre in which you would like to write, but read other stuff too. Start making a list of all of the things you like to see in a book. What is your favorite POV? How important is Romance? Also, make a list of things you don't like. All of these things will help guide you toward writing the best book for you.
