Goodreads asked Elise Frances Miller:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Elise Frances Miller I always give these two suggestions. First, join a writer's group or two - one for learning, encouragement, company and opportunities to publish your work (my California Writers' Club does all that), and one critique group (my San Francisco Writers Workshop did that for me for 15 years).
Then, begin by mastering the art of the short story. Short fiction is not easy, but it takes less time (if say, you have kids or a day job, as I did!). Most importantly, if you can publish your short fiction, you have a leg up for publishing your novel when it is written. Best of luck, aspiring writers.
