A Goodreads user asked Kasie West:

What were your favourite book genres when you were a teenager and have they changed a lot? Did you always want to write contemporary novels? Lots of love from Austria :)

Kasie West We didn't have the young adult genre when I was a teenager. So I read anything anyone handed me. Recommendations from teachers, like, THEIR EYES WERE WATCHING GOD, THE SCARLETT LETTER, and TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD or things I stole off my parents' nightstand like CS Lewis or the latest romance novel. I loved to read. And no, I had no idea I wanted to write at all, let alone write contemporary. I decided to try my hand at writing at the ripe young age of 30. I loved it so much that I kept at it until my first published novel. Contemporary has been my favorite genre to read ever since I discovered young adult, so it was only a matter of time until I found my way into writing it. Thanks for the question and for reading my books. :)
