Goodreads asked Fiona Davis:

What’s the best thing about being a writer?

Fiona Davis The best thing about a writer is being able to interview people and do research, before you ever sit down to figure out the plot or the characters. At that time, anything is possible and every tidbit feels like a clue to the story. For example, when researching The Dollhouse, I interviewed women who’d lived in the hotel in its heyday, and learned that there was a lot of talk of ghosts and suicides in the halls of the Barbizon Hotel for Women, as every so often a distraught young guest would throw herself off one of the balconies. For a novelist, that knowledge can be turned into fuel for a tragic plot line.
