When I was a child, a neighboring woman left my mother a steamer trunk filled with hand-crafted items, and my mother often wondered why. That memory inspired my forthcoming novel, "The Finnish Girl," which grew into a very broad exploration of the Finnish American immigrant experience - and the novel starts with a similar trunk and a mysterious packet of memorabilia.
