Thanks for your questions. I spend two to three years researching each novel. The time I spend writing is about equal to the time I spend researching. I love so many historical time periods that it's difficult to choose just one, but I love the 1920's-1930's. Hey, Ruta! I'm from Lebanon and have read Between Shades of Gray. It's amazing, I love historical fiction especially those of WWII. So my question is: were you always interested in history and how did it influence your writing career exactly? If you wanted to write other historical novels, which different period would you choose? As a middle school English teacher, Between Shades of Gray is one of my top recommendations for students who think they know WWII books. When I saw Salt to the Sea in the library, I snatched it immediately and am finding it hard to put down. I was surprised, though, to see another World War II book from you. Did the research for one lead to the idea for the other?
