Hi Ruta, I really enjoyed your book "Between Shades of Gray" and was wondering what inspired you to write this book? Also, how do you come up with your stories? I have considered writing a story of my own, even though I am still in middle school, but I can never find the right thing to write about.

Hi Annabella!
Thanks so much for your question. I was inspired to write "Between Shades of Gray" because much of the world is not aware that Stalin deported so many people to Siberia. I wanted to write the book to create an awareness and also give voice to the people who never had a chance to tell their story.
In terms of finding something to write about, don't worry, it takes time. Keep your ears open for a story that raises such curiosity in you that you can't stop thinking about it. :)

Hi Ruta! I just finished 'Salt to the Sea', and it was amazing! Thank you for writing it, and for telling the stories that history so often forgets. My question is this: If you lived 200 years in the future, what current events would you be the most drawn to illuminating through historical fiction, and why? Thanks!

I love your books & have recommended them to several friends. They move me to tears as they are so beautifully written. I write too, have had short stories and poetry published, & would love to know how you managed to get your first book published. Did you have to submit to many publishers? Did you get initial rejections? I am aware how difficult it is to get published & hope to have my first novel published soon.

I'm reading Out of the Easy now, and I've already read Between Shades of Gray. I'm a huge fan of both! This question is about Between Shades of Gray: What really compelled you to write such a haunting and memorable piece of literature? Also, how much research did it take to make sure the book was historically accurate? Thanks!
