Hi Ruta! I have read Between Shades of Gray recently and I absolutely enjoyed it. I look forward to reading your other two books soon. They probably are just as good! I was wondering: Will your future books be focused around other historical events/concepts? If so, what are they or what do you hope they will be?

Hello!
Thanks so much for your question. Yes, my future books will also be based on historical topics. Writing historical fiction is like being a detective. I love discovering secrets, hidden facts, and hidden heroes. Sometimes history can be perceived as boring. But through characters and story, historical statistics become human and suddenly we care for people we've never met, we can find their country on a map, and then - the history matters. Through historical fiction we can give voice those who will never have a chance to tell their story. That inspires me!
My new book (that I'm currently working on) is set in Spain during the 1950's and reveals unknown history related to the Spanish dictator, Francisco Franco.

Ruta Sepetys:
Hi! I just finished reading "Between Shades of Gray" and it was amazing! I really want to read "Salt to the Sea" because I heard that Joana, Lina's cousin, was one of the main characters in the story! I was also wondering what made you want to be an author? And I was also curious to know what are some of your favorite books, and if you have any book recommendations?

Hi Ruta! As someone who's family is still strongly connected to their Lithuanian heritage finding Between Shades of Grey was amazing because you don't see that country mentioned often. (My grandmother actually recommended it to me) All of your books seem to contain settings that we don't seem to hear a lot about, especially during the time frames you focus in on. What inspires you to select the settings you do?
