Hi Ms. Sepetys! I did an English report on "Between Shades of Gray" a few years ago and I am still in love with the story. Also, just recently, I read "Out of the Easy" and that, too, was an incredible book. A question from me is what is the entire writing and researching process like when you are making a novel? Thanks!

Hello Shannon!
Thanks for your question about my research process.
For research I first read all of the nonfiction sources available. I speak with academics and historians. I then travel to the country where the story takes place to research the landscape, the culture, and the people. I generally interview many people/survivors while researching a book. I then weave stories from many people together into one character so that way I'm representing a larger human experience and not just one person.
The research and writing process generally takes about three years. I know that seems like a long time, but I love the experience!

Why did you decide to end your book (not including the epilogue) with Lina thinking of Andrius? Why not end with Lina leaving Siberia? Did you do this to give an air of mystery but also of hope? I'm in a literary group at my school, and we together have read and discussed your book. We believe hope is a main theme of your novel. Some of the members of the group will also be asking questions.

I have read all three of your books and absolutely love them! I am currently in high school and am interested in possibly writing plays and musicals when I'm older. Out of curiosity, what do you think about a stage adaptation of any of your books? I can't wait for Ashes in the Snow to come out! Thank you for being such an inspiration to me!

Hi Ruta! I'm a book blogger online and I love your books. My favorite book of yours is, "Between the Shades of Gray." Will there be a sequel following Lina and Andrius picking up where the epilogue left off? I would love to see how Lina and Andrius meet again, and get a description of their married life. Lina and Andrius have the best love story and I would love to see more of them in the future!
