Hi Ruta! I just wanted to say I loved your book. It was definitely informative (without being too dry), and at the same time, it was a real tear-jerker. My question is, where do you get the idea for your books? Also, what is the process that you usually go through in order to write a book?

Hi Allie!
I am drawn to hidden history and stories of strength through struggle, so I look for topics that contain those elements. I'll become aware of the ideas through news articles, journals, or readers who suggest an idea to me.
My process of writing always begins with research. I try to travel to the location where the event took place and interview survivors and witnesses. Their testimonies generally spark plot ideas and then I take it from there.
Thanks for asking!

Hi Ruta! I have just read "Between Shades of Gray" and it is now my favorite book of all time! I was about to go visit you at the SE-YA Book Fest in TN, but I couldn't because my school cancelled our trip due to the weather. I wanted to ask you this: I have read the excerpt from "Salt to the Sea" from my copy, and I'm wondering, is Joana from your new book really Lina's cousin, inspired by her, or a new character?

Hi Ruta! I'm one of your spanish readers and I have a question about your future projects: are you working on a novel right now? And.. will you come back to Spain?
PS: I want to read "Salt to the sea" but first I'm re-reading "Between shades of gray" (this time in english. Wish me luck)! :)
