What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Yolanda Navarra Fleming What's an aspiring writer? Perhaps someone who doesn't have the courage to open up their minds and empty the contents. Or does this question pertain to writers aspiring to be published? If you sit and write, you are a writer, just because you do it. Publishing comes later.

My best advice, with 28 years under my belt, for writers in general is as follows:

1. Write what you know. Write what you want to learn about. Write about what gets you out of bed in the morning, or even the middle of the night. Uninspired writing is the pits. I've done my share of it. No more!

2. Read for the best inspiration. Feed your soul good, inspired writing so you may be motivated to do the same. There are so many good books. My favorite inspiration right now is Dr. Wayne Dyer's memoir, I Can See Clearly Now. It's a must-read for all people, especially writers. He wrote 40 books.

3. Self-publish your work. Maintain creative control. But also make sure you have a truly professional editor who's not afraid to tell you the truth about your work. Remember that every good race car driver has a mechanic.
