Dren asked Sally Kilpatrick:

How old were you when you first encountered Shakespeare?

Sally Kilpatrick I vaguely remember attempting to read Macbeth out of a high school textbook when I was in elementary school. My first real memory of Shakespeare is of checking out a book from the junior high library that was a sort of simplified version of The Tempest, Love's Labor Lost, and one other play that now escapes me. That book fascinated me. I'll confess that I didn't really get a feel for Shakespeare until college, although bits and pieces of dialogue would stick with me in my high school classes. (Nothing like "You blocks, you stones, you worse than senseless things!) Even now, I love pulling up SparkNotes and reading the "translation" to the side or going to the Shakespeare Tavern where they act out the jokes so no one misses them.
