You use the word 'detained' which implies some problem with the law. While The Dust in Sunlight does offer some insight into Dominican life, society, and culture, it is not a book about the Dominican Republic. The DR has a unique, complex, and often contradictory culture. First impressions are usually wrong. Part of the reason I found it so interesting, and stayed so long (over fifteen years) was because it took me that long to understand and learn it. There is a website, DR1.com, which is a treasure trove of gringo/expat experience/advice in the DR as they travel along the long learning curve that is the DR. Junot Diaz is a Dominican/American writer. I have not read his work but one or some of his books may offer insight into DR life.
