Goodreads asked Kate Collins:

What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Kate Collins Join a writing group that critiques. Join a national organization that knows the market. Soak up all the writing advice you can and don't be afraid of rejection. A writer has to see a rejection as a lesson, not as an arrow to the heart. The lesson may be that you've targeted the wrong publisher or it may mean you have work to do on your story. This is where a strong critique group can help. In any event, accept critique advice with an open mind. Never see it as "criticism."
