JJ Moses asked Alexa Moses:

Which authors would you recommend as must-reads for prospective writers?

Alexa Moses There's nothing you must read. More important is simply to read! Read in the genre you're thinking of writing in, plus anything else that takes your fancy. Read with breadth and eccentricity, and you'll discover what kind of books you like, you're drawn to, you want to write.

For technique and building confidence, I find Anne Lamont's Bird by Bird and Ursula Le Guin's Steering the Craft helpful. I also love Henry James and George Elliot and Hilary Mantel and Suzanne Collins, but they're only MY must-reads - they don't have to be yours.
