You know, my biggest pet peeve is this actual trope, so for me I find it pretty easy to stay away from these tired themes.
Those movies where the busty blond runs into the dark house calling out for her friends, who by this point are clearly dead...I hate those films. So I try to stay well clear of anything that I find particularly annoying.
