When I begin any book I always begin with nature--a species like the loggerhead sea turtle, Atlantic bottlenose dolphin, wild American shrimp, birds of prey, or monarch butterflies. I don't have a book idea, take notes and research. The species and the lowcountry landscape here in coastal South Carolina are my source of inspiration.

Enjoyed reading "The Beach House" and "Swimming Lessons" for the stories and the turtle info. While loggerheads are the super stars in the books, I wanted to know if you've ever seen the other turtle you mention -- the leatherback -- in person. If so, what was that like?
