I respond well to problems that I see or hear about. Then, I think "How can I write a story about this?" and away I go. Once I have created the characters and get them interacting with each other, they take off (almost) on their own and the story evolves.
It is almost as if the situation asks me a question, and I answer. One of my favorite tricks it to put my character in an impossible situation before I go to bed. The next morning I have to figure out how to get him/her out of this mess.
