Goodreads asked Ken Farmer:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Ken Farmer I was doing research on a character I had been writing about for four years, Bass Reeves, and I stumbled across the mention of a female Deputy US Marshal in the Indian Nations...The only female Deputy to work under Judge Isaac Parker (the Hanging Judge). No one has written about her.
The Fort Smith Elevator, in its November 6, 1891, issue described "Mrs. Miller…(as) a dashing brunette of charming manners…" The same article described Miller as "…expert shot and a superb horsewoman, and brave to the verge of recklessness. It was like turning a 12 year old into a candy store. I first added F.M. (Fiona Mae) Miller to one of my Bass Reeves novels, "BASS and the LADY", and then spun her off into her own book, "LADY LAW".
