Maxine (Booklover Catlady) asked James Devo:

Have you found that there is a "typical reader" of novels such as Blood Red that fall into the Steampunk category?

James Devo Hi Maxine

Thanks for getting in contact. Interesting question.

The Wonder series is attracting readers across many subgenres of speculative fiction including steampunk, grim dark and urban fantasy.

Interestingly, steampunk sometimes feel less literary, and more lifestyle oriented - it attracts many craftsmen and fans of cosplay, in a way that purely literary genres do not. This bears out in the artwork and music that fans of the Wonder have created - you can see some fan artwork on the Facebook page. I'm also trying to get the music up there that's been sent to me inspired by The Battle of Maisy in the first book. It's one of the most attractive parts of writing something that can be labelled in part as Steampunk.

I think there's something for everybody in the Wonder - an alternative history populated by the high fantasy tropes of Elf and Fairy, with Steampunk villains and grim dark misfit heroes. And not a king riding to the rescue or a chosen one finding his calling anywhere in sight...

I hope that answers your question! Check out the Facebook page for more...

Cheers

James
