Ana G. asked Delia Ephron:

Hi Delia! I absolutely love You've Got Mail, an adaptation of the musical She Loves Me. It seems like most adaptations aren't very subtle about staying copying the original work, but You've Got Mail told the same story and had a different message I think. What made you see the possibility for a different story while referencing an established piece? (is that crazy complicated? :) )

Delia Ephron Hi Ana,
The producer suggested to us that The Shop Around the Corner could be updated using email. It wasn't our idea. But it was a good reason to remake it and make it contemporary. And then the big bookstores were putting little bookstores out of business at that time, so we used that idea. You've Got Mail is actually an adaption of the movie The Shop Around the Corner, and that is an adaption of a 1937 Romanian play. So is She Loves me. It all goes back to Romania.
