Thank you Amy! (My apologies--I just found this! Yikes....) I think the inspiration was a photograph taken of a young woman in a long skirt, standing in the doorway of the Cabot Head lighthouse c. 1900. No one seems to know who she is—her features are difficult to see. (Although the great, great grandson of one of light-keepers thinks it might be his relative.) She is a very mysterious figure...inconspicuous and yet also commanding...so much a part of the place that you almost don't even notice her....
