I'm edging up on done with a new book, but it's not ready for prime time and I just don't have much else--sry! But since you read the His Dark Materials books and at least some Gaiman, you might check out a Death vs. Lyra Belacqua promotional piece I did for Suvudu. It won't make sense unless you've read at least some of Sandman and His Dark Materials though. (Keep in mind, you did say "napkin scribbles.")
I do have a couple of other recommendations, though--I saw a couple of Stephen King books on your goodreads list, but not my favorite--if you haven't read The Stand, you should. I also really, really like Millenium by John Varley. Also, Varley'sshort stories are uniformly brilliant.
I've been on a Sandman Slim kick (full disclosure: Richard Kadrey blurbed Mt. Char, so I'm not entirely unbiased, but I do genuinely like them. Actually, that reminds me: I blurbed one called The Raft a couple of months ago that was really good as well--it's a kind of surreal, post-apocalyptic thriller with a brilliant ending.
Have you read The Invisibles? It's not for everyone, but if you're ever in the mood for batshit crazy, it's a fine choice. It's kind of a Lovecrafty-William Burroughs vs. the Illuminati mashup? I mean, seriously weird. Consider the source on that.
If you care, message #175 in this book club thread talks about the book I'm working on now. I sincerely believe that I'll be done in the next couple of months. And this time I mean it.
Sorry I don't have more for you. In my defense, as I type this it's 5:30 a.m. on Sunday and I'm already working. (Please note the expression of long-suffering nobility on my face as I climb up on this cross here. :-)

I just have to tell you that this book absolutely blew me away. I'm a librarian, so I read a lot of books. To contrast that, I'm a mom of 3 young boys who works full time, so it generally takes me a lot longer than it used to. I could not put your book down. Ignored my husband, ignored the kids, read it while I ate... got through it in one weekend. It is probably one of my all-time favorites in modern literature?

Hi Mr. Hawkins, I really REALLY enjoyed the LIbrary at Mount Char. I'd never quite read a book like it. I was ready to give up halfway through but once the threads started coming together I was hooked. I was wondering who your influences were (I have a guess of one or two but I want to see if i'm right!) and what the inspiration behind the story was. Thank you! ?
