Goodreads asked Jerry B. Brown:

Where did you get the idea for your most recent book?

Jerry B. Brown My book, The Psychedelic Gospels, was inspired by a discovery I made in 2006 of a psychoactive mushroom (Amanita muscaria, the enigmatic Soma of the Hindu Rigveda) sculpted into the forehead of the most prominent green man of Rosslyn Chapel in Scotland. This discovery, which I recognized because I had been teaching a course on "Hallucinogens and Culture," forced me to reconsider the controversial writings of a number of scholars on the role of entheogens (God-generated-within plants) in the history and origins of Christianity, and to begin looking for psychoactive icons in Christian art in Europe and the Middle-East.
