Lady Trent's voice is so charming and Victorian-era. Did you have any old diaries/letters that you got inspiration from when creating her as a character and writer?

Marie Brennan There's no one specific person or work, no. The voice grew out of me having read a great deal of Victorian material for the final book of the Onyx Court series, WITH FATE CONSPIRE. I will say, though, that well after I'd started writing, I came across Mary Kingsley (specifically the book TRAVELS IN WEST AFRICA), and she reminded me a great deal of Isabella!
