QNPoohBear asked Deanna Raybourn:

How did Veronica, a sheltered young lady, learn about unladylike subjects/get her hands on scientific texts? She seems more anachronistic than Julia.

Deanna Raybourn Funnily enough, Veronica is not anachronistic at all--she's actually inspired by a real lepidopterist by the name of Margaret Fountaine who traveled the world for decades, searching out elusive species of butterfly and conducting love affairs. There were dozens of famous female Victorian explorers who did the same, some pursuing scientific or artistic careers, others traveling purely for the pleasure of discovery. Veronica, like most of these women, is an autodidact, and she would have been particularly inspired by the careers of Eleanor Glanville and Maria Sibylla Merian.
