The Good Thief is one of my favorite stories. I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a galley copy of The Twelve Lives of Samuel Hawley, and I'm taking my time with each and every page. How do you write such authentic characters? How do you possibly get into the minds of each of them?

Mindy, Thanks for writing! For me, characters take a long time to develop. I'm always adding layers and looking for ways to make them more complicated. Whenever I get stuck, I try and make the character do something unexpected. Often it opens up a new trajectory into their past and their current motivations.
