So sorry I missed this, Alex! As of today, I would recommend Tom Lake, by Ann Patchett, and Trust, by Hernan Diaz. I just finished both and loved them. Tom Lake is both quiet and profound, a family drama that touches on mother-daughter relations, artistic ambition, and marital commitment. Trust is a twisty, turn-y novel whose 2d section will puzzle you until you get to the 3d. Lots said about fabricating a persona in the financial world of the 1920s, along with the unbelievable sexism that existed back then. Good luck! Hope all is well with the family!
