With as popular as your series has been, and with as many books, as you write, do you ever worry that you're writing to meet your reader's expectations more than your own? If not, how do you avoid it?
Jacqueline Winspear
If I was writing to readers' expectations, I would not have taken a break from the series following LEAVING EVERYTHING MOST LOVED. I write a story I want to write - frankly, the desires of the reader do not enter into the equation when I am writing. If I was a writer who wrote for a certain readership, I think I would be better off going into marketing! It would also be risky, as I have a very, very broad readership, not only in terms of country of origin, of cultural and educational background and age, but in literary taste, and also divided between men and women. As a writer I want to remain true to myself and to what I want to write - if I did anything other than that, it would actually be a disservice to the readers. Readers are intelligent and thoughtful - they don't want to be pandered to.

I love your books but I sometimes find it frustrating that it seems you really don't want Maisie Dobbs to be happy. How many bad things can happen to one character?! I realize you want to concentrate on aspects of the mystery at hand but often, crucial events in her life seems to be handled in the space of a few scant pages or in flashback, especially in "A Dangerous Place".

Like all of us here, I love this series and how you have brought one of my favorite historical periods to life. With the next installment coming, I've been thinking about Maisie's getting married and pregnant and then tragically losing it all. Was this part of the storyline all along or did you feel that maybe the feint at a conventional life was not right for Maisie after all?
