Julia asked Jacqueline Winspear:

Masie faces such a great variety of situations, all of which impact her to some degree, but each one fits seamlessly into the fabric of the world you've created. Every detail is so well-researched and feels so true to the time period. How do you manage that? Where do the ideas for Maisie's cases come from?

Jacqueline Winspear The ideas for the themes in the Maisie Dobbs series come from various sources, and from aspects of history or human experience that interest me. ELEGY FOR EDDIE was inspired by the true story of a very gifted man who was born in a brewery stables - my father knew him when he was a child. THE MAPPING OF LOVE AND DEATH was inspired by a letter to a newspaper. That's how it goes - the kindling for the fire of a story can come from various sources.
