I have always been rather vocal in expressing opinions. I used to say "I will give you my opinion even if I don't have one".
I would write things down even when there was nobody to read them. I even experimented with a blog. But when the opportunity to write a book came along, I jumped in with both feet. Writing for others forces you to be more careful, judicious, and factually accurate. That in turn, has helped me mature a bit more (even at my age).

Dear Mr. Barsky, Fascinating book! I spent a year in Jena as an undergrad and your stories of Rosenkeller/student life bring back memories. My question is about your American ttutor in Moscow. I am fascinated about foreigners, especially Americans, who moved to the USSR and how they tried to adapt to this radically different reality. What was her back story? Was she a willing employee or forced? What was her fate?
