I think the number one thing for any writer is to keep learning. Visit a critique group if you're brand new. Get some stories written. Find magazines you can send them to.
Because writing is so personal, criticism is never easy to take. Don't worry about that, take it as best you can and practice implementing even bad advice to see if you can get a handle on what good advice sounds like.
