Salaam Nadia! Shab bakhair! I just finished reading "The Pearl That Broke Its Shell", and can't tell how many emotions I've gone thru' in last 2 weeks reading it page by page, chapter by chapter. How beautifully you've weaved together this story of Bibi Shekiba & Rahima-jan's fears, challenges, struggles and injustice with their fate, hopes and dreams. So grateful & thank you for inspiring. What inspired you to write?
Nadia Hashimi
Salaam to you as well! Thank you for reading and for taking the time to write. I'm glad the story connected with you in its many themes. I was inspired to write this story by the stark realities of life in Afghanistan for so many Afghan women and girls. Growing up in the United States with a family that encouraged me to feel empowered, I knew that my reality was not the same as that of my counterparts living in Afghanistan. I hope that this book will be some small tribute to the resiliency, bravery and ingenuity the women and girls of Afghanistan demonstrate on a daily basis.

Dear Nadia, I am reading your book and I have a question and it looks like nobody knows the answer, not even my Afghan friends.. I am from Iran and speak farsi. In the following sentence : "A year later, in the same dismal month of Qows, Shekiba’s languishing mother decided not to wake up from sleep" what does "month of Qows" mean? Will be glad to hear from you. Thanks in advance, Warouj

Hi, I enjoy reading your book. I've heard a lot about arranged marriage involving children in some countries, but to read a story from their perspectives (even if it's a fiction) gives a new perspective. It makes me wonder, though, do you still practicing Islam? Because through the writing, I can sense that the narrator somehow feel disappointed with some aspect of the religion.
