Goodreads asked B. Tom Hunsaker:

How do you get inspired to write?

B. Tom Hunsaker Winston Churchill was fond of saying, “I am always ready to learn, although I do not always like being taught.” I think the most compelling books (and interesting reads), particularly in the non-fiction space, are rooted in important questions about the human experience. The best work tends to emerge when the author doesn't start out with a statement to make, but rather a question to explore. The writing is more inquisitive and compelling - allowing/inviting the reader to find her/his own experience in its words.
