Lois McMaster Bujold:
Is there a character-driven speculative fiction series (other than your own) that's especially high on your list? (Before too long I'll have run through all of yours, even accounting for rereads.)
Lois McMaster Bujold
I am fond of Megan Whalen Turner's alternate-Greece-ish series starting with The Thief, and Ben Aaronovitch's Rivers of London urban fantasy, first book Rivers of London, retitled Midnight Riot in its US release.
I have also been drawn into the manga/anime from CLAMP titled Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, which has an obligate narrative interlock with their other series xxxHolic. One can spend many, many hours trying to figure out wtf is going on with the plot/s, but it's the characters that induce me to bother.
Just for starters.
Anyone else have some faves?

Dying Ezar took comfort in atheism. In Wot5G someone like Ezar could choose sundering for fear of the unknown or judgement. How judgmental are the gods? The Bastard’s Hell is mentioned, is that where souls taken in the death miracle go? Anyone else? The Bastard takes those the other gods won’t, thieves, prostitutes, etc, but Des said there are those too vile like the psychopathic bandit chief. How many are too vile?

Any chance your wonderful quote about honor / reputation was inspired by W.C. Fields? "It ain't what they call you, it's what you answer to"? I was at a diner in New Hampshire recently that had a number of pithy quotes, and when I read that one, your quote immediately came to mind.
