How do you research your books? Do you start with an idea and build it from there, or do you conduct research on a topic, and then develop the characters and let he story unfold from there?

Both! Sometimes I get an idea or image in my head, and it goes from there. But it's also true that as I do the research I find things that inspire me. Sometimes I think to myself, Oh, I've got to use THAT!

Hello Ms See, I have just finished reading your two books, "Shanghai Girls" and "Dreams of Joy" and enjoyed both tremendously. They depict the changes that occurred in China from the pre-to post-revolution beautifully. I have always been interested in China having been close to Pearl Buck who was the first American writer to write about that country. I'd love to know what you think of her books? Eva F.

I'm almost out of your novels to read, and I'm holding off on reading "Peony in Love", the only one I haven't read yet, because I simply don't know what to do once I've finished it. Do you have any recommendations for me that I can look forwards to after this last novel? Good historical fiction books on China, or on anything else? Oh, and are you working on or planning any projects in the future?
