It depends how you define 'couple'. My favourite pair of characters, who are in many sense a couple, are Lenny and George in the Steinbeck story 'Of Mice and Men' which is one of my all time favourite pieces of literature. Their immense loyalty and ability to care for each other is truly inspirational.
