Penny Morgan
Ian Rankin's Siobhan Clarke and John Rebus. She is a perfect foil for his cutting-corners, free spirit. She gets irritated by his unorthodox methods, by contrast sticking to agreed police procedure and embracing new police techniques. Better yet, I suspect she's bored with his music obsession. Nonetheless, there is mutual respect there, and even a degree of affection.
