What a great question! I had to really think about this. But it just might be Lyra Belacqua and Iorek Byrnison from Philip Pullman's The Golden Compass. At first there couldn't be two more different characters -- a young girl and an armoured bear, but slowly, while facing terrible dangers, a deep and affecting bond grows between them. You come to realize that their friendship makes sense as both characters share a deep well of courage and grit. And being so different the scenes between them crackle with intensity!
