Thanks for this thought provoking question! Though they were not officially a couple, I would have to say Sydney Carton and Lucie Manette from A Tale of Two Cities. I never rooted for the two to get together, but I think they count because of Sydney's devotion to her and what their courage and compassion achieved in the face of terror.
