I either do it the pleasant way, or the unpleasant way.
The pleasant way is thinking about something that really touches my strings the right way and telling myself to make a variation of that. Interesting characters, dialogues, relations, conflicts, everything that makes me care about the work.
The unpleasant way is thinking about the things I really don't like, works I find simply boring and not attractive in the least. Then, I try to find in them something that could have been good and might have even worked, if it wasn’t for all the reasons that made it bad.
