I think it would be a toss-up between Sam and Frodo from Lord of the Rings, and George and Lennie from Of Mice and Men. However, for 'a couple' in a more traditionally romantic sense, I'd opt for Janie and Tea-Cake in Their Eyes were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston.
